Current Research Projects

Ford

Ongoing CHIP research projects include a randomized clinical trial (RCT) of the CHIP study on an “Integrative Medicine Intervention for Back Pain” at Ford Motor Company in conjunction with the University of Maryland School of Medicine.

American Specialty Health (ASH) & Medstat

During 2008, initial “predictive equations” were finalized for the CHIP study on “Predictive Modeling of the Impact of Smoking and Weight on Clinical and Cost Outcomes of Worksite Interventions” with Medstat and American Specialty Health.

NASA/Wylie Laboratories

CHIP and NASA are co-developing a “National Assessment of Stress Adaptation” (NASA2) which is a state of the art, online assessment of worksite stress focusing on individual, organizational, and environmental factors. The primary objective of the project is to develop and validate a “Worksite Stress Assessment” instrument for NASA. NASA2 is a precursor to identify areas for subsequent intervention studies.

Corning

Worksite Based Smoking Cessation is the focus of this project based on the research of Dr. Myra Muramoto, to translate her outcomes with a worksite focused intervention to be delivered and evaluated at the Corning Corporation. This project is termed the Outcomes of Brief Interventions: Worksites as Neo-Communities (OBI-WAN) project.

Dow

Tea Intervention for Protection against Oxidative Stress (TIPS) is a Worksite intervention under development with Dr Iman Hakim and the Dow Corporation using concentrated green tea extract to mitigate pulmonary damage with former smokers and/or workers exposed to petrochemicals

National Grid (NGT)

In conjunction with NGT, the CHIP faculty and staff are developing a Behavioral/Pharmacological Smoking Cessation Intervention. There is ongoing development with Pfizer (as a possible new CHIP member) to test an appropriate pharmaceutical (Rx) plus a behavioral support program for smoking cessation with National Grid.

Prudential

Prudential Associates are empowered to address their healthcare resource needs when facing the prospect of work disability through focused, professional employer-based advocacy in This study with Prudential is designated as the ” Supporting Total Recovery In Valued Employees” (STRIVE) pilot research project. In STRIVE, the objective is to develop and evaluate an integrative medicine approach to the management of disabilities for Prudential’s own employees. A new, comprehensive, early intervention model is being tested with both clinical and cost outcomes.
